Environment Omaha launches www.passthepotatoes.com, a virtual town hall event that invites anyone interested in Omaha to submit ideas for improving the sustainability of the city. It’s powered by MindMixer, a new web platform that allows the public to generate ideas, help others evolve their ideas and ultimately vote and prioritize the best ideas. Perimeter Hike of Fontenelle Forest

Leaves at 10 AM, Forest Nature Center/Returns about 5PM.
Teacher Naturalist Bob Goetschkes will lead this 6 to8 mile Exploratory
Hike around the edge of the Forest. Binoculars for birding are recommended.
Bring a sack lunch, two liters of water, and wear sturdy boots that cover your ankles. Also, dress for current weather conditions by wearing layers of clothes with a rain shell to don if needed.

Join Sierra Club members and friends for a tour of a small sustainable organic farm. Rhizosphere Farm in Waterloo is a “certified naturally grown” farm, owned by Terra Sorenson and Matt Hall.

26 Mile round trip ride along the Oak Creek Trail between Valparaiso and Brainard, NE. This former Union Pacific rail winds its way through wooded, rolling hills and offers “highland” vistas along the way.(Note: NRD has closed Steamboat Trace until further notice due to flooding. OCT is billed as their “All Season Trail”).

Sunday July 11th, 2010. We will leave Wohlner’s Grocery Store, Stinson Park, 72nd and Center, at 8:30 A.M. sharp. The drive to the trailhead will take about 1.5 hours. I will have a van with a bike hitch for any who need to carpool. I can loan you a trunk rack if you’ve no way to transport your bike. “My name is Clyde Anderson of Omaha, Nebraska. I am Treasurer and Transportation Issues Chair for the Nebraska Chapter - Sierra Club. We have over 2,000 members in the state of Nebraska. Sierra Club is America’s oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization.

Back in the 1940’s there was a vision for the Missouri River, one dominated by turning the river into an industrial, region-developing resource. Many benefits have derived from that plan: electricity, irrigation, and recreation. The costs, however, have been high: a fragmented food chain, dozens of native fish and bird species endangered or threatened, and people alienated from a dangerous river.
