The Road to Black Sheep Farms

Sierra Club February Educational Program
Thursday Feb. 25, 7 p.m.
First United Methodist Church, 69th and Cass Streets, Omaha

Brian and Kelly Smith, pursuing healthy foods grown in a chemical-free, sustainable way, grew vegetables for their family in their yard in Omaha,  sold some at a Farmer’s Market, then they moved their family onto a farm where they grow heirloom crops sustainably and organically, and continue to sell at the farmer’s market.

Brian and Kelly Smith, who both grew up in Omaha, were keenly interested in healthy foods grown in a chemical-free and sustainable way.  For several years, they grew vegetables for their family in their back yard in Omaha, and even sold some of their vegetables at the Village Point Farmer’s Market.  Last year, in a leap of faith, they abandoned city living and moved their young family onto a farm near Bennington.

On their farm, which they christened Black Sheep Farms, they focused on growing heirloom crops sustainably and organically.  They grew crops for themselves and started a CSA, or Community Supported  Agriculture, where investors receive a weekly share of the harvest.  And they continued to sell weekly at the farmer’s market.

Brian and Kelly’s adventures were chronicled in a series of articles in last summer’s Omaha World-Herald.  Join us as we hear first-hand from Brian and Kelly as they share their moments of triumph, and despair, as new farmers. And we’ll hear about their philosophy about agriculture and why we, as consumers, should strive to know our farmers and how they produce our food.

Please join us for a fun and entertaining evening with our local farmers, Brian and Kelly Smith.
